Before You Move
Moving doesn't have to be stressful if you start in advance. Here's how you can begin the process before the big day!
Declutter your home
It's normal to have some extra stuff you might not need anymore, especially if you've lived in your old house for a while. Before the move, take some time to declutter each room in your home, sorting your belongings into "keep," "donate/sell," and "throw away" piles. Start with any problem areas, such as your attic, garage, and closets. If necessary, rent a storage unit that you can keep until moving day.
Find movers
If you're relocating during spring or summer, make reservations with a moving company as far in advance as possible. Movers have limited availability during busier seasons, so it's best to make plans ahead of time to secure your preferred vendor. Our team can share some of our favorite movers if you're looking for recommendations!
Change your address
A week or two before your move, notify all important loved ones, service providers, and the post office of your address change. Your bank, doctors, and insurance companies should know about your new address as soon as possible. Now is also a good time to get acquainted with future utility providers, schools, as well as how to register your vehicle and get a North Carolina license.
Handy Packing Tips
- Label: Ensure all of your boxes are labelled by room. Color-coding can make the process easier!
- Protect: Collect bubble wrap, plastic bags, tissue paper, blankets, and packing peanuts to add padding to boxes.
- Reinforce: Only use reinforced boxes to keep your items safe. Special wardrobe and electronic boxes can help you move difficult objects.
- Wrap: Cover larger furniture with plastic wrap or blankets to prevent scratches.
- Take Care: If you have any valuables, consider bringing them with you throughout the move.
- Be Careful: Avoid packing flammable, combustable, corrosive, or explosive items.
On Moving Day
The big day is finally here! Follow these tips to ensure a hassle-free transition into your new home.
Pack an overnight bag
There's a good chance you might make it to your new home before the moving truck. If this happens, pack an overnight bag with all of your essentials, such as phone chargers, medication, and a change of clothes. If you're driving, flying, or staying in a hotel, it might be a good idea to pack for multiple days.
Do a final walkthrough
Before you leave your old home, do a final walkthrough to make sure everything is in working order for the new homeowners. Check all spaces—especially closets—to see if you've left anything behind. This is also a good time to relive some of your best memories you made in your old place!
Deep clean everything
Once you get to your new home, take some time to deep clean everything. Scrubbing all those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies is much easier without furniture—but if you're feeling a little exhausted, it's worth splurging on a professional cleaning service to do the hard work for you.
After You Move
Unpacking can take a while, especially after a long relocation. Don't stress about not getting everything done at once!
Sort your boxes
This is when labelling and color-coding your boxes comes in handy! As soon as possible, put your boxes in the room they belong in. Start unpacking your essential rooms first, like the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Once the necessities are covered, you can work at your own pace.
